Students move into Middle School from Grade 7 onwards and further build on their core knowledge and skill in subjects such as English Language, Maths, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Science, and Arabic Social Studies. The work completed in this phase of the school supports students in making their first real choices about their future education pathway with learners able to continue with our US curriculum program.
The school adopted the Common Core State Standards the year it was established – these standards are designed to prepare all students for success in higher education, in the workplace, and in life. The full Common Core standards can be viewed at www.corestandards.org
In our literacy program, students are given a chance to read authentic texts that are typically encountered by students in daily life, such as in magazines, books, or newspapers. Some of these texts may be emotionally charged or may contain language outside of a student’s particular cultural experience. Classroom activities include teacher read-aloud, class discussion, vocabulary work, and extension activities to engage students.
The school implements McGraw Hill Wonders (Reading Writing Companion and Practice Books) for reading, grammar, and spelling from grade 1 to grade 5 with an interactive platform that supports the learning process. In addition, the school has created a booklet for grade 1 beginners that explores topics more deeply to support students and scaffold learning. Kg3 beginner classes are also available. Grades 6 through 8, use the HMH Into Literature books for literature (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), Into Literature grammar workbook, and Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop for vocabulary to help build a strong vocabulary.
For use by all students in KG through Grade 6, we provide a comprehensive program that is in line with Elevate Science Books and is based on NGSS standards. The program was specifically written to develop science literacy and to prepare students for state and standardized tests. The standards of the program lie in a balance of the three domains of science: life science, earth science and technology, and physical science. Within the ongoing review, linking to additional experiences for greater depth of understanding ensures that we apply differentiation during the learning process to meet all students’ needs.
A comprehensive program, following NGSS standards, Elevate Science Books, is provided for all students in grades 7 and 8. Three courses are comprised of these texts. All science disciplines are covered in these courses, including biology, physics, chemistry, and earth science. Elevate Science Books cultivate critical thinking skills in accordance with the scientific method and aid students in preparing for future academic years. Students are assigned a science booklet each term, and there are different levels of depth of knowledge questions to train them on how to solve problem-solving and critical-thinking questions and prepare our students for MAP and other standardized tests.
ECIS implements an American curriculum which is based on American standards from kg3 through 8 – Envision Mathematics. In kindergarten, our students study math as part of classroom activities. Students learn to count sets of objects, add, subtract, read, and write numbers. This course requires a student to attend 5 mathematics periods per week.
We are following the TechnoKids Computer Curriculum. TechnoKids Computer Curriculum is a collection of technology projects. Projects include engaging computer activities for students in different grades from Grade 1 through Grade 8. Techno Kids computer projects are correlated to English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Common Core State Standards and standards provided by the International Society of Technology Education. Integrate Technology into Learning using Technology Projects Integrate learning objectives in multiple curriculum areas into one unit of study. TechnoKids promotes project-based learning. Teach English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, geography, history, and visual arts, as well as technology skills such as Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Adobe Photoshop, 3D Sweet Home, and programming languages. Computer lessons have students apply knowledge to analyze information, collaborate, solve problems, and make decisions.
Our social studies curriculum is aimed at helping our students make sense of the world we live in – it allows them to make connections between global ideas and their own lives. The curriculum encourages our students to think critically, raise questions, and cite evidence in support of their interpretations. Students will learn how to draw upon chronological thinking, comprehension, analysis and interpretation, research, and decision-making. These skills provide the conceptual framework that allows them to make informed decisions about local, national, and international issues and challenges.
French language learning in our school: French is a language of culture, art, cuisine, and higher education. The opportunity to learn a language now that will serve you in your future education, travels, and engagements with culture, and art. We offer French language learning in our school with French teachers. For us, mastering the French language goes through the notions of: Trust – Open-mindedness – Communication: This French course offers you the development of your knowledge of French grammar, the enrichment of your vocabulary, training in oral expression, comprehension, pronunciation, and practice of the written language.
Given the importance of the Arabic language because it represents our Arab identity, we always strive to provide the best for our students to consolidate this identity by paying special attention to the Arabic language and keeping pace with the development of education.
The Department of Islamic Education teaches the ministerial curriculum in all its branches, in addition to supporting the student with additional working papers and electronic assignments on a permanent basis.
